Delta Tau Delta took second place in the 2013 Little 500 race.

Beta Theta Pi took the win at the 63rd Little 500 at Indiana University on Saturday afternoon.

The final lap was a sprint between the Betas and defending champion Delta Tau Delta. Beta Theta Pi member Tom Laser say he handed off the bike to their lead sprinter at two laps to go.

“The race split up and it turned out to be the strongest against the strongest rather than a more lopsided team. We definitely didn’t want to come down to a sprint, which we kind of did at the end, but it was more of just a dead sprint,” he says. “We just wanted to blow up the race and leave everything on the track.”

Cyclists for the Little 500 put in months of training for a two-hour opportunity to take the grand champion title. Laser says that training proved to be time well spent.

“Its hard to add up the amount of hours on the bike and all the sacrifice that has gone into this and it’s one of those things that in just a mere two hours, all of that has paid off and it’s just a feeling of disbelief,” he says.

Delta Tau Delta finished in second place in front of Phi Delta Theta (3rd), the Cutters (4th), and the Black Key Bulls (5th).

Dan Kinn, a member of the Black Key Bulls team, says this will probably be the last time he and his teammates ride in an event like this because they are all seniors. Still he says they have no regrets.

“I got on the bike with six to go and we were down a little bit, so my job was to make contact with Beta and Delts at the time, I didn’t do that,” he says. “I gave it everything I could and with two laps to go I was dying so I handed off to Brant Powell, and then he did what he could.”

Bill Armstrong Stadium was packed and filled with cheering crowds as teams crossed the finish line.
