The Bedford North Lawrence Stars defeated the Rebels 66-52 in overtime. They now head to state to face Fort Wayne South Archers on Saturday, March 2, at 8 p.m. The Stars go into the game undefeated with a record of 27-0. The Archers are 24-3 for the season.
Friday night, the varsity girls’ basketball team at Bedford North Lawrence High School held a final practice and fined-tuned skills before the semi-state game.
The undefeated team banks on its defense, including that of Alexa Bailey, who is the daughter of former Indiana University star and BNL grad Damon Bailey. Being a key player for the team, the sophomore works to aid her teammates while on the court.
“I’m vocal. I talk to my team,” she says. “I lead my team in that way. I don’t score much, I do other things defensively.”
Head Coach, Kurt Godlevske says his team will need Bailey’s defense, and that of her teammates, to challenge a taller team from Roncalli Saturday.
“They pose a lot of different problems that maybe we have not seen in the past with their size and with their ball skills and big girls,” he says. “So we’ve had to focus a lot more on that we have to do defensively handling those two than anything”.
Tomorrow’s game is at Bedford’s home court as the 26-0 Stars take on the 24-3 Rebels at 4 p.m.
