The state is scrambling to fix its third tax-collection blunder in five months. Auditor Tim Berry‘s office says the staffer in charge of laying out how much excise-tax money each county should receive each month reused the March figures instead of plugging in the numbers for April.
The result: 58 counties received a half-million dollars that should have gone to the other 34.The state has asked the overpaid counties to repay amounts ranging from $79 to $105,000.
Berry spokeswoman Erin Sheridan says the counties which were shortchanged should receive a check for the difference by Tuesday.
