The Wigwam was the second largest high school gym in the country until it was closed due to high costs.

There could be a future for the Wigwam in Anderson. Local architect Jesse Wilkerson is looking into the idea of developing the former high school gymnasium into a convention center.

Anderson Community Schools owns the Wigwam. Superintendent Dr. Felix Chow says there has been some interest in buying the building, but so far, nothing has solidified.

“There have been several requests before the Wigwam was closed, so we have shown the building to several parties, and none of them came through,” he says.

The Wigwam was the second largest high school gym in the country, but because of the high cost of operating it, the district had to shut its doors a year ago. Wilkerson says the community has been hopeful that a big part of Anderson’s heritage might be saved.
