Ted McKinney poses with Lieutenant Governor Sue Ellspermann after she announced he would lead the Indiana Department of Agriculture.

An executive for an animal health company is the new director of Indiana‘s State Department of Agriculture.

Ted McKinney most recently held the position of corporate affairs director for Elanco, an Eli Lilly company.

He replaces Gina Sheets, who is leaving after a year on the job to do mission work in Liberia.

McKinney says he wants to connect different industries on and off the farm to boost the value of Hoosier farm products, whether by forging relationships with retailers and manufacturers or by combining the work of different producers into something that can bear an Indiana brand. For example, packaged popcorn  made with Indiana-grown soy or canola oil could be branded as such.

McKinney says improvements in former third world economies are creating huge new markets as more people are able to add meat and dairy to their diets.
