Of the six male finalists, four were retained. Just six of the 16 women still up for the job were kept.
The Judicial Nominating Commission has invited six women and four men back for a second round of interviews August 8 and 9. After those discussions, the panel will send the names of three finalists to Governor Daniels.
Indianapolis dominates the list of semifinalists. All four private attorneys to make the cut are from Indy: Erin Lewis, Andrielle Metzel, Geoff Slaughter and John Young. A fifth candidate, Court of Appeals Judge Cale Bradford, is a former Marion Superior judge, and Steven Nation is a Superior Court judge in neighboring Hamilton County.
The other finalists are Circuit Judges Mary Willis of Henry County and Marianne Vorhees of Delaware County, and Superior Judges Fran Gull of Allen County and Loretta Rush of Tippecanoe County.
The appointment will be Daniels‘ third in two years. There had been speculation Justice Robert Rucker might decline to seek retention on the fall ballot, giving either Daniels or his successor another appointment, but Rucker filed his ballot paperwork last week.
