		<itunes:summary>Heinrich Biber was one the German baroquersquo;s great violin virtuosos. His compositions were highly respected in their day and are still enjoyed by performer and audience member, alike.

A recent Cedille label recording by the Baroque Band of Biberrsquo;s orchestral suites known as ldquo;Mensa Sonorardquo; is a wonderful addition to the Biber discography. Directed by Garry Clarke, the orchestrarsquo;s performance is an ideal blend of high energy and poetry. As a bonus, the recording includes Biberrsquo;s spirited ldquo;Battalia.rdquo;

Musica Antiqua Colognersquo;s 1990 recording of works by Biber is surely a classic. Their program combines many of Biberrsquo;s most popular orchestral pieces alongside charming ones by contemporaries Johann Schmelzer and Johann Walther. If there are only a handful of Musica Antiqua Cologne recordings that can be called signature, this is one of them.</itunes:summary>

		<itunes:summary>Leclair on the Pardessus de Viole with Tina Chancey
Tina Chancey is one of Americarsquo;s most distinguished performers on the viola da gamba. Her latest recording is the second in an ongoing Golden Apple series entitled ldquo;The Versatile Viol.rdquo; It features a set of five Leclair violin sonatas played on the pardessus de viole, the smallest member of the gamba family and one unique to the late-French baroque.

Chancey is joined by gambist Susie Napper and harpsichordist Web Wiggins, in what is a beautiful recording of a rarely-heard instrument, evoking the spirit of the French baroque with ease as both musical poet and virtuoso.
Opera Lafayette performs "Zelindor"
Opera Lafayette has been exploring some of the lesser-known 17th and 18th-century operas for some time. Their latest Naxos release features a collaborative effort on the part of two French Baroque composers known for joint projects mdash; Franccedil;ois Rebel and Franccedil;ois Francoeur.

Directed by Ryan Brown, Opera Lafayette performs the opera, Zelindor, with elegance and refinement. The recording also includes a suite and aria from Le Tropheacute;e, another Rebel/Francoeur work originally used as a prologue to Zelindor.
Symphonies and Concertos of Touchemoulin
A composer Irsquo;m completely unfamiliar with, Joseph Touchemoulin, is the subject of a new recording on the Ramee label. Touchemoulin's music has only recently been explored, and on this release Director Patrick Ayrton leads the orchestra ldquo;The Inventionsrdquo; in two symphonies and three concertos, giving us an excellent, if all too brief, tour of Touchemoulinrsquo;s wonderful compositions.</itunes:summary>

		<itunes:summary>ldquo;A Loving and Patient Davidrdquo;
The German period instrument orchestra known as Die Koelner Akademie has been championing the music of little-known composers for many years and has been producing numerous world-premiere recordings in the process. Directed by Michael Willens, two of the Akademiersquo;s more recent CPO label releases have been devoted to the oratorios of Johann Mattheson, a prolific German baroque writer and composer. The Akademiersquo;s recording of Matthesonrsquo;s oratorio, ldquo;A Loving and Patient David,rdquo; is an excellent debut for a work, perhaps, not heard since the composerrsquo;s time. The soloists, chorus, and ensemble are in fine form.
ldquo;The Greatest Childrdquo;
Johann Mattheson composed many oratorios on biblical themes. The other CPO recording by Die Koelner Akademie focused on a Christmas story. Entitled ldquo;The Greatest Child,rdquo; the work is a welcome addition and alternative to the handful of baroque works that get performed on a yearly basis around Christmas time. The Akademiersquo;s performance is dynamic and, like their other Mattheson recording, has excellent soloists, as well as chorus and orchestra.
Concertos and Overtures by Ferdinand Ries
A student of Beethoven, Ferdinand Ries was not as prolific as his mentor. But, if Die Koelner Akademiersquo;s recording devoted to his works is any measure, Ries was an excellent composer, nonetheless. The Akademiersquo;s program includes a concerto for two horns, a concerto for violin, and an overture from each of his first two operas. The performances are world-class, to say the least. The concerto soloists, in particular, exhibit great energy and virtuosic appeal.
Forgotten Treasures, vol. 7
For volume seven in the Forgotten Treasures series, Die Koelner Akademiersquo;s director, Michael Willens, chose a program of classical oboe concertos by Johann Christian Fischer and Carl Stamitz. As has been the case with previous recordings in the series, the Akademiersquo;s performance is terrific. Michael Niesemann, the concerto soloist, proves why hersquo;s one of the world great early oboists. His extroverted playing is full of subtlety and contrast.

	Listen to a past Harmonia program featuring Die Koelner Akademie, or read a blog post in which Michael Willens answers questions about the ensemble.
