Loesser: Baby, it’s Cold Outside

Although his name is most familiar today for his hit musicals, Frank Loesser still wrote the occasional free-standing pop song. Loesser originally wrote "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for he and his wife to sing at a winter house-warming party. A few years later, Loesser sold the rights to the song and it ended up in the 1949 aquatic musical "Neptune's Daughter." Although it sounds like an extension of yesterday's mythological selection, the film featured no Gods, but rather starred Esther Williams (MGM's premiere Olympic-swimmer-turned-leading-lady). Among Loesser's other claims to fame were "Guys and Dolls" and "The Most Happy Fella," as well as "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying," which in 1962 won a Pulitzer Prize for Drama, something only seven musicals have done since the 1920s!
