This piece was first performed at a graduation ceremony for one of America's most prestigious universities. In fact, the composer of this work was awarded an honorary doctorate in music at that ceremony. The faculty made sure that he was the star of the ceremony by playing several of his most well-known pieces, including this selection. Ever since that day, this piece has been associated with graduation ceremonies across the US and around the world.
