Anton Bruckner (1824–1896): SYMPHONY NO. 0 IN D MINOR "DIE NULLTE": I. Allegro

National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland; Georg Tintner, conductor. Bruckner: Symphony No. 8 and No. 0 (Naxos)

We're counting through different numbers this week on the show, and we'll begin with the number zero, or really "null." When Bruckner started teaching at the Vienna conservatory in 1869, he began to devote time to composing a new symphony. The symphony known now as Symphony No. 0 in D minor was originally titled Symphony No. 2. It was written directly after Bruckner's first symphony, but for whatever reason, Bruckner was unhappy with the work, and withdrew it from his catalogue of works. He put a large zero or null sign at the top of the manuscript, providing the work its modern day nickname – "Die Nullte." Bruckner's next four symphonies were written in a flurry of activity over four years, and his Symphony number zero wasn't performed until after his death.
