Thanksgiving is a time when many of us introduce fire to a bird to create a hot, delicious turkey feast. So on the podcast this week, I present Stravinsky's Firebird. Ok, ok, The Firebird is not about roasting a bird, but rather about a mythical bird whose plumage glows red and orange like fire, and who becomes both a blessing and a curse to its owner. The Firebird was the first ballet commissioned by ballet impresario Sergei Diaghilev. He had heard Stravinsky's music in St. Petersburg in 1909, and knew that he had to introduce the young composer's music to audiences in Paris. Diaghilev's ballet company Ballet Russes introduced several of Stravinsky's works to Parisian audiences, including Petrushka and The Rite Of Spring.
