U.S. Senator Dick Lugar was in Indianapolis today talking to energy companies and environmental groups about the bill he introduced to Congress as an alternative to the Obama administration’s struggling energy legislation.
Lugar says while he doesn’t expect much advancement for his plan either, it represents steps the United States needs to take in the near future.
The senator says America’s energy use is growing, but not as fast as in some other countries. He says that could reduce the country’s influence on foreign energy sources, and is one of the top reasons the U.S. needs to find solutions to conserving and producing its own energy.
“Why is this important? Simply because wars have come about for much less cause. And the fact is that with the dynamic aspect of the growth in China, the growth of India, the attempted growth of many places, the requirements have zoomed astronomically,” Lugar said.
Lugar’s plan was criticized by many environmentalists for not going far enough. But he says the combined conservation and efficiency efforts, which did not include cap and trade, could reduce America’s energy consumption by 11 percent.
