Salmonella Outbreak Linked To Sprouts From Illinois Farm

Contaminated alfalfa sprouts leads to multi-state salmonella outbreak.

Alfalfa sprouts from a farm in Illinois were contaminated with salmonella.

The U.S Food and Drug Administration is advising consumers not to eat Alfalfa sprouts or Spicy Sprouts from Tiny Greens Organic Farm of Urbana, Illinois because of salmonella contamination. So far there have been ten confirmed cases in Indiana, with 90 others across Illinois, Missouri and Iowa. Amy May, an Enteric Epidemiologist for the Indiana Department of Health, says 10 cases have been confirmed in Indiana, 6 of them being in Marion County.

“The sprouts were distributed in 4oz and 5lb containers to various customers including Jimmy Johns, farmers markets, additional restaurants and groceries”, says May.

Though some Jimmy Johns Restaurants reported to have stopped serving sprouts, some Monroe county locations have not. If the sprouts were purchased at a grocery store or farmers market, May warns to be extra careful when disposing of them.

“Please take those sprouts and tie them up, double bag them in a plastic bag and throw them in the trash so that no other human or wild animal could come in to contact with those potentially contaminated sprouts”.

The U.S Food and Drug Administration is working along with the Center for Disease Control, the Indiana Department of Health and Tiny Greens Farm to resolve the issue. No deaths have been reported.
