A House bill to block states from requiring labels on genetically engineered foods is set to reach the chamber floor by the end of next month, and supporters say they have the votes to get it passed.

Kansas Representative Mike Pompeo introduced the Safe and Accurate Labeling act in 2014.

The bill would create a USDA certification program for voluntary non-GMO labels, much like the organic label system.

Last week a provision was added to a draft of the bill that would prevent states from passing their own GMO label requirements. It would also nullify Vermont's mandatory GMO labels that are slated to go into effect next year.

Pompeo told Politico's Morning Agriculture that he has the votes to pass the bill.

The House Agriculture Committee will hold a hearing on the bill this week, but it must also get through the House Energy and Commerce Committee. Both committees will have a chance to modify the bill's language.
