Food Stamp Usage Reaches Record High

Food insecurity is still high as the federal government reports record numbers of Americans on food stamps:

Numbers:Â 46.7 million people were on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, in June. Food stamp spending has almost doubled over four years to $75.7 billion.

Children: Nearly half -- 47 percent -- of food stamp recipients are children.

Food Insecurity: Over 50 million Americans reported being food insecure, which means they have trouble keeping food available consistently due to lack of resources. That number has risen 2.6 percent since 2010.

Farm Bill: The upcoming farm bill would cut the USDA's food stamp program, its single largest expenditure. The Senate proposed $4 billion in cuts, while the House has proposed $16 billion.
