Monika Herzig and David Baker are conducting a survey about the impact of jam sessions on musicians.

Dear Jazz student/ performer/ educator,

You are invited to participate in a research study about the role of the Jazz Jam Sessions as a learning tool for jazz musicians. If you are a possible subject because you perform or teach jazz on any level follow this link to the survey:

Jazz Jam Survey

Completing the survey should take no longer than 10 minutes. This is phase 2 of a preliminary study conducted in 2008 and your response is much appreciated even if you participated in the preliminary survey. The significance of the results will increase greatly with increased participation, so we encourage you to pass this link along to your colleagues and students and any lists that might include further possible subjects.

The study is being conducted by Dr. Monika Herzig, Lecturer in the Arts Administration Department in the Indiana University School of Public and Environmental Affairs and David Baker, Distinguished Professor of Music in the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. It is funded by the Music and Entertainment Industry Educators Association (MEIEA). We expect publication of the results by Fall 2013.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the role of jazz jam sessions as a learning tool for musicians as well as its current social structure and etiquette. The survey is part of a larger historical and social investigation including literature reviews and in-depth interviews. Your participation is most important and much appreciated, as well as any help in disseminating this message to other prospective participants.

Please feel free to contact me any time for further info and questions.
