While Columbus, Indiana is known for its architecture, for the Arts Council "art and architecture go hand in hand," says Arthur Smith, Marketing and Media Director for the Arts Council.

Communities can really no longer think of the arts as a nice extra. The arts are a critical component in the long term viability of our community. –Arthur Smith, Marketing & Media Director

The mission of the Columbus Area Arts Council ” is to provide visionary leadership in the arts. The Arts Council fosters, supports, and promotes growth in the arts that educate and enrich the cultural environment of Bartholomew County and Region 9.”

“We’re in a great position to provide necessary leadership…to further the economic development potential for the arts,” says Smith.

The Arts Council advocates for the arts, helps other organizations promote events, and organizes events of its own to promote the arts in Region 9. The Arts Council also serves as the regional arts partner of the Indiana Arts Commission, which means they serve as grantors to arts organizations within their 9-county region.

Region 9 consists of a nine-county area: Bartholomew, Dearborn, Decatur, Franklin, Jackson, Jennings, Ohio, Ripley, and Switzerland counties.
