Stone Belt Empowers Through The Arts

Stone Belt’s Art and Craft program goes beyond occupational therapy. The art program is right at the heart of the agency’s mission to prepare, empower and support individuals with developmental disabilities to participate fully in the life of the community. WFIU’s Yaël Ksander got to know a few of those individuals, who are starting to define themselves as artists.

The show of mixed-media mosaics by the artists of Stone Belt is currently on view at Lennie’s Restaurant, at in Bloomington. Another exhibition is scheduled at the WonderLab in March. The collaborative sculpture, “Animal Island,” which was dedicated in October 2008, was the first installation on the B-Line Trail.

Yaël Ksander

Raised in Alexandria, Virginia, Yael holds a MFA in painting from Indiana University, an MA in art history from Columbia University, and a BA from the University of Virginia, where she studied languages and literature. She joined WFIU in 2000, where she hosts music and talk programs, and produces features on artists, writers, musicians and other creative people for Artworks. Yael co-hosts A Moment of Science and writes essays for A Moment of Indiana History. She enjoys getting to know WFIU listeners--from those who submit commentaries for Speak Your Mind to those who provide the comments she reads on Saturday mornings.
