The Lilly Library’s Puzzling Collection

When most people think of a library, what comes to mind? A dimly lit, quiet, hands-off kind of place.  Add the words “rare books, manuscripts and special collections” and white gloves pop into the picture along with a long list of rules you don’t have time to read.

As WFIU’s David Wood found out, the Lilly Library at Indiana University is changing that perception. And what better way to get hands-on than with a collection of mechanical puzzles? David spoke with the Lilly’s new Curator of Puzzles.

The Slocum Puzzle Room is open during library hours with puzzles for you to explore on your own. Currently, an online database is under development with images of many of the puzzles.

David Wood

Originally from Leavenworth, Kansas, David Wood moved to Bloomington in 2005. He received his Bachelor of Music from Kansas State University, and his Master of Music from the University of North Texas. He studied ensemble direction at the Jacobs School of Music's Early Music Institute and joined WFIU in 2006 as an announcer. He is currently Music Director/Program Content Coordinator for the station. David’s interests include Irish music and language, music and religion, running, the outdoors and, of course, classical music!
