David “Fathead” Newman Dead at 75

Saxophonist David “Fathead” Newman, whose blend of jazz and inimitable Lone Star soul made him an integral part of Ray Charles’ orchestra and served him through dozens of impressive leader dates, passed away from pancreatic cancer January 20th at the age of 75.

Born in Indianapolis, Indiana, David Brent Johnson moved to Bloomington in 1991. He is an alumnus of Indiana University, and began working with WFIU in 2002. Currently, David serves as jazz producer and systems coordinator at the station. His interests include literature, history, music, writing, and movies.
