A Moment of Science
It can happen at a carnival or on the dance floor--that moment when you stop spinning and the world starts spinning around you.
A whirlpool is the result of two forces acting against each other.
We will answer that question, with a question. How fast does the earth turn?
How fast anything spins is partly determined by how its weight is distributed. The closer an object’s weight is to its axis of rotation, the faster it spins. To picture this, imagine an ice skater doing a pirouette. When her arms are extended, she spins slowly.
