Unlucky in Love

Ella Fitzgerald

Call it cruel irony, call it a bad omen, or simply laugh it off, but this year, Valentine's Day, our most Romantic holiday, is preceded by Friday the 13th, our unluckiest holiday. This week on Afterglow, we'll examine the flipside of Valentine's Day-the failures, the non-starters, and the heartbreak. We're featuring songs of love lost and love never found, sung by Rosemary Clooney, Cassandra Wilson, and Frank Sinatra.

We also turn our spotlight on Nat King Cole, who died on February 15, 1965, fifty years ago. While Cole's songs usually focus on the sunnier side of L-O-V-E, he recorded a few songs of heartbreak as well. We'll hear Cole perform Jack Segal and Marvin Fischer's classic "When Sunny Gets Blue," and Colin Romoff and Daniel J. Meehan's warning for anyone this Valentine's Day, "Look Out for Love."
