Friday, August 1 at 9pm

In commemoration of the Giuseppe Verdi bicentennial in 2013, Music Director Gustavo Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic perform a thrilling concert of Verdi’s towering Requiem Mass at the Hollywood Bowl. The concert presentation features soloists Julianna Di Giacomo (soprano), Michelle DeYoung (mezzo-soprano), Vittorio Grigolo (tenor) and Ildebrando D’Arcangelo (bass).

Great Performances at the Met: Rusalka
Sunday, August 3 at 1pm

Renée Fleming won the Met’s National Council Auditions 25 years ago singing the forlorn mermaid’s famous aria “Song to the Moon” and has sung the role of Rusalka more than any other artist in the Metropolitan Opera’s history. Fleming returns to her signature role in this enchanting performance of Dvořák’s soulful fairy-tale opera about a water sprite who loves a human prince. Tenor Piotr Beczala co-stars as the Prince, Dolora Zajick is Ježibaba, and dynamic young maestro Yannick Nézet-Séguin is on the podium.

Classical Rewind (My Music) – Pledge Special
Sunday, August 10 at 3:30pm

Martin Goldsmith (former host of NPR’s Performance Today) guides viewers on this fresh exploration of the world of classical music. This visual and auditory joyride offers a fanciful look at the classical masterpieces—providing spectacular video of dancers, phantoms, masked men, and fireworks to accompany each composition. Goldsmith brings his expertise to the podium, adding insight on the history and creation of this stunning music. With personal reflections from Itzhak Perlman, Joshua Bell, and Stewart Copeland of The Police, among others.

Great Performances: Vienna Philharmonic Summer Nights Concert 2014
Friday, August 22 at 9pm

Led for the first time by a guest conductor Christoph Eschenbach, the world-renowned Vienna Philharmonic returns for their 11th open-air concert in the magnificent gardens of Austria’s Imperial Schönbrunn Palace, a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site. The concert soloist will be the internationally-acclaimed piano virtuoso Lang Lang who plays Strauss’ Burleske. As it happens, Eschenbach (a former star pianist himself) was one of the conductors who recognized and encouraged Lang Lang’s talent very early, initiating a long-standing artistic friendship. The Chinese pianist encores Mozart’s famous Turkish March. Other works on the program include Mazeppa by Franz Liszt, the overture to Benvenuto Cellini by Hector Berlioz, and Richard Strauss’ Till Eulenspiegel’s Merry Pranks.

Itzhak Perlman performing at the "Rejoice" concert

Renowned violinist Itzhak Perlman and celebrated cantor Yitzchak Meir Helfgot join forces for a musical exploration of liturgical and traditional works in new arrangements for both chamber orchestra and klezmer settings. The music of Rejoice showcases the confluences between the violinist’s famed classical technique and Helfgot’s magnificent voice. Celebrate the world of Eastern European Jewish music—a genre Perlman calls “chicken soup for the soul.”
